It is specifically crafted for use in removal of the posterior arch of the vertebrae by cutting through the laminae. It could also be used for hemi-laminectomy procedures. A variety of spinal procedures can benefit from such instrumentation because it allows for increased access and visualization of a particular segment of the spinal cord or can simply be used to alleviate pressure on the cord. Additionally these ronguers are available at 90 degrees up or down or 40 degrees up or down with a 5.0 mm and 3.0 mm bite respectively.
